Mountain Refuges

The "koče" of the Slovenian Alpine Club: your base camp to conquer the peaks of the Julian Alps.

THE NETWORK OF KOČE

Slovenia boasts an exceptional network of over 170 mountain refuges, managed primarily by the PZS (Planinska Zveza Slovenije, the Slovenian Alpine Club). This dense network allows you to hike for several days without carrying a tent, moving from refuge to refuge.

The refuges range from simple unmanned shelters to genuine small mountain hotels with private rooms and restaurants. Most are open from June to September, while some valley refuges remain open year-round. The standard is good: bunk beds with blankets, simple but hearty hot meals.

The ascent of Triglav (2,864 m), Slovenia's highest peak, passes through several legendary refuges: Aljažev dom (valley), Planika (2,401 m), and Triglavski dom na Kredarici (2,515 m). The experience is as social as it is sporting — refuges are places of camaraderie where hikers share their adventures.

ICONIC REFUGES

Kredarica (2,515 m)

Legendary

The highest refuge in Slovenia, a must-stop for Triglav. Book absolutely in July-August. Dormitories and double rooms. Exceptional sunrise views.

Koča na Doliču (2,151 m)

Panoramic views

On the southern route to Triglav, perched on a spectacular ridge. One of the most beautiful refuge locations in the Alps. Intimate atmosphere and warm welcome.

Pogačnikov dom (2,050 m)

Multi-day hiking

Key stop on the Via Alpina and Peace Trail. Starting point for the Triglav circuit. Well-maintained dormitories and generous mountain cuisine.

Koca na Kamniskem sedlu (1,903 m)

Kamnik Alps

Alternative to the Julian Alps, in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Less crowded, equally spectacular. Access from Kamniška Bistrica in 3-4 hours.

PRACTICAL TIPS

Booking

Mandatory in July-August for popular refuges (Triglav, Bled). Use the PZS website or call directly. Off-season, no need to book.

Equipment

Bring a sleeping sheet (liner) — blankets are provided but not sheets. Headlamp, flip-flops for showers, earplugs recommended.

Meals

Staffed refuges serve simple hot meals: soups, jota (stew), sausages, strudel. Budget €8-15 for a meal. Tea and hot water generally available.

PZS Card

PZS members (or affiliated clubs) enjoy reduced rates (-30%). The card costs €40/year and pays for itself in 2-3 nights. Worth considering for a trek.
