When to Visit Slovenia
Every season offers a different experience. Here's our guide to choosing the ideal time.
Summer (June - September)
Best time to visit
Pleasant temperatures (25-30°C), ideal for hiking, swimming in lakes and rivers, and outdoor activities. This is peak tourist season, especially in July-August around Lake Bled. The Ljubljana Festival fills the capital with open-air concerts all summer long.
Spring (April - May)
Recommended season
Nature awakens: wildflowers carpet the Alpine valleys and temperatures are mild (15-22°C). Fewer tourists than summer, lower prices. Perfect for visiting Ljubljana, the Postojna Caves and the Karst vineyards. The May beekeeping festival celebrates a centuries-old Slovenian tradition.
Autumn (October - November)
Ideal for wine tourism
Forests blaze with autumn colours, grape harvests are in full swing in the wine regions. Temperatures still mild in October (12-18°C). The Kurentovanje festival in Ptuj and St. Martin's Day (November 11) celebrate the new wine. The perfect time for gastronomy and wine tourism.
Winter (December - March)
Skiing and thermal spas
Ski resorts (Kranjska Gora, Vogel, Krvavec) offer slopes at gentler prices compared to the French Alps. Thermal spas (Terme Olimia, Thermana Laško) are perfect for warming up. Ljubljana's Christmas market is one of the most charming in Central Europe. Temperatures: -2 to 5°C in the lowlands.
Must-See Destinations
Slovenia is brimming with natural and cultural treasures. Here are the essential stops on your itinerary.
The Slovenian capital is an elegant, green and human-scale city. Ljubljana Castle, perched on its hilltop, offers panoramic views over the old town with the Alps as a backdrop. The pedestrianised banks of the Ljubljanica River, lined with cafés, are the beating heart of the city.
Don't miss Jože Plečnik's Central Market, the Dragon Bridge, and the alternative Metelkova quarter. The food scene is booming with chefs reinventing traditional cuisine. Ljubljana was named European Green Capital in 2016, a well-deserved title.
Lake Bled is Slovenia's postcard. Its turquoise water, its island with the little Church of the Assumption and its medieval castle perched on a cliff form a scene you'll never tire of admiring. Walk around the lake (6 km, 1.5 hours) or take a pletna, the traditional wooden boat.
In summer, swim in its 24°C waters. In winter, the snowy landscape is magical. Don't leave without tasting the kremšnita, Bled's iconic cream cake. For the sporty, the lake is also a top spot for stand-up paddle and rowing.
Slovenia's 46 km of Adriatic coastline are a concentrated dose of Mediterranean charm. Piran, a Venetian jewel, enchants with its narrow alleys, Tartini Square and colourful facades. From the ramparts, the view stretches across the sea to Italy on a clear day.
In Portorož, enjoy the sandy beaches and spas. The Sečovlje salt pans, worked since the Middle Ages, produce an exceptional salt. The coast is also a paradise for fresh seafood and local wines like Refošk. From June to September, the water temperature reaches 24-26°C.
The Soča River is famous for its unique emerald colour. Born in the Julian Alps, it winds through spectacular gorges and wild valleys. It's a paradise for white-water sports: rafting, kayaking, canyoning and hydrospeed await you in a dreamlike setting.
The town of Bovec is the ideal base for outdoor activities. Don't miss the Tolmin Gorges, Napoleon's Bridge in Kobarid, and the Soča Trail (25 km). The valley is also steeped in history: the Kobarid Museum retraces the Battles of the Isonzo from World War I. Discover our white-water sports guide.
Other Destinations Not to Miss
Postojna Caves
Europe's largest publicly accessible cave system. An underground train takes you through 5 km of galleries adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Just 20 minutes away, Predjama Castle is built into a 123-metre cliff face.
Triglav National Park
Slovenia's only national park covers the Julian Alps. Mount Triglav (2,864 m), the national symbol featured on the flag, attracts hikers from around the world. Alpine lakes, waterfalls and mountain huts line the trails.
Maribor
The country's second city, in the heart of Styria's vineyards. Home to the world's oldest vine (400 years old), Maribor is a vibrant university town with a charming old quarter and the Mariborsko Pohorje ski slopes just 15 minutes away.
The Karst Region
The birthplace of speleology, the Slovenian Karst is also an exceptional gastronomic region. Karst dry-cured ham (Kraški pršut), Tolminc cheese and Teran wines are savoured in osmice, the pop-up taverns opened by winemakers.
