Škofja Loka

One of Slovenia's oldest towns: the Capuchin Bridge, a castle and medieval lanes, 30 minutes from Ljubljana.

A thousand years where the two Soras meet

Granted to the Bavarian bishops of Freising in the 10th century, Škofja Loka grew at the confluence of the two Sora rivers and keeps one of Slovenia's most complete medieval centres: two cobbled squares in a row, frescoed facades, vaulted passageways — all overlooked by the castle, home to the regional museum.

The Capuchin Bridge

Below the castle, the Capuchin Bridge has crossed the Sora in a single stone arch since the Middle Ages — it is the town's classic picture, red roofs and belfry behind. Cross towards the monastery for the best viewpoint.

The Škofja Loka Passion Play

The town preserves the oldest dramatic text in the Slovenian language: the Škofja Loka Passion Play, a theatrical procession through the old town performed by hundreds of locals and inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list. Performances are rare — a few seasons per decade — and sell out far in advance.

Crngrob and the Loka hills

A few kilometres north, the pilgrimage church of Crngrob raises its belfry amid the fields: its facade carries one of the country's most celebrated Gothic frescoes. Behind the town, the Škofja Loka hills roll out hamlets, barns and waymarked trails — a foretaste of the Alps fifteen minutes from the capital, ideal by bike or as a half-day loop.

Getting there

Frequent buses and trains from Ljubljana (about thirty minutes): the perfect medieval day trip from the capital, best combined with the region's craft workshops — lace, pottery, gingerbread.
