A 25-minute drive from Bled, Lake Bohinj is Slovenia's largest permanent lake — 3.18 km² of glacial water in the heart of Triglav National Park. No island, no castle: the scenery here comes down to the Church of St John the Baptist and the stone bridge at Ribčev Laz, set against a wall of peaks. Swimming, kayaking and viewpoints

The water reaches about 22°C in midsummer: swim freely from the southern shores and at Ukanc, or paddle a kayak or SUP over translucent water. The Vogel cable car climbs to a balcony of the Julian Alps facing Triglav, and the legendary Seven Lakes Valley trail starts from the neighbouring valley.

Around the lake: Mostnica, Savica, Studor

From Stara Fužina, the Mostnica gorge lines up two kilometres of emerald potholes on the way to the Voje valley. At the far end of the lake, the Savica waterfall — legendary source of the Sava Bohinjka — is earned via a forest staircase. Vogel and winter in Bohinj

In winter Bohinj changes register: the Vogel cable car climbs to the only ski resort inside Triglav National Park — balcony slopes facing the massif, and a deserved reputation on fresh snow — while the lake, sometimes frozen at its edges, falls completely silent. The Church of St John the Baptist under snow, without a single visitor, is worth the off-season trip on its own.

Getting there

By car, allow 25 minutes from Bled. Without a car, regular buses link Ljubljana and Bled to Bohinj, and Bohinjska Bistrica station sits on the scenic Bohinj railway line — one of the country's most beautiful rail journeys.
