Every 15 August — a public holiday in Slovenia — the highest village in the upper Sava valley puts on its Sunday best, quite literally: in Rateče, many of the costumes worn for Vaški dan (“Village Day”) are over a hundred years old. On the village square, a stone's throw from the Planica ski-flying hills, people mow, spin wool, sing and eat the way they did a century ago. It is one of the most authentic festivals in the Julian Alps, and this year it falls on Saturday 15 August 2026.

The hour-by-hour 2026 programme had not been published at the time of writing. Previous editions follow a well-oiled rhythm: traditional dishes and local crafts from 1 pm, an ethnological programme dedicated to the rateška noša (the Rateče costume) and old customs around 2.30 pm, then a veselica in the late afternoon with a brass band, folklore group, zither players and accordionists.
Costumes more than a century old
What makes Village Day special is that nothing here is fancy dress. The rateška noša is one of Slovenia's best-preserved traditional costumes, and many of the pieces worn on the day are genuine family garments handed down through generations. Villagers also demonstrate the old skills: the making of žoki, Rateče's typical woollen slippers, happens before your eyes, from raw wool to finished shoe. This is living Alpine culture, not a re-enactment.
11–15 August: workshops at Kajžnkova hiša
The village museum, Kajžnkova hiša (a branch of the Upper Sava Museum in Jesenice), runs family ethnological workshops all week: models of typical Rateče houses, the local costume up close, a miniature village, button wind chimes. From 11 to 14 August, 10 am to noon, and on Village Day itself from 10 am to 2 pm. Expect €6 per person, materials and a snack included, from age 7 (younger children with parents). Also on site: the free “Pastirci” exhibition on Alpine herding in the valley.
Rateče, more than a festival
Perched at 864 m in Slovenia's far north-west, Rateče is the village of the three borders: above its rooftops, Mount Peč (Tromeja) marks the point where Slovenia, Austria and Italy meet. This is also where the Rateče manuscript (14th century), one of the oldest texts written in Slovene, was found. And just outside the village opens the Planica valley, home of ski flying, with the Nordic Centre and its zipline.
To round off the day, the Zelenci nature reserve — the emerald spring of the Sava Dolinka — is a 20-minute walk from the cycle path. Getting there and practical tips
- By bike (our favourite): the D-2 cycle path links Kranjska Gora to Rateče in 7 almost-flat kilometres, with the Ponce peaks as a backdrop. Easy rentals in Kranjska Gora.
- By car: 10 minutes from Kranjska Gora on the Rateče road; car parks at the village entrance. 15 August is a public holiday: arrive before noon, the square fills up fast.
- By bus: Arriva valley buses link Kranjska Gora with Rateče (Jesenice–Rateče line); check the public-holiday timetable.
- Insider tip: Zelenci in the morning cool, the festival from midday — and save room for the villagers' homemade dishes. If rateški krapi, the local filled dumplings, are on the menu, don't miss them.

Yes, access to the festival on the village square is free, as is the “Pastirci” exhibition at Kajžnkova hiša. You only pay for the museum workshops (€6, materials and snack included) and whatever you eat and drink at the stalls.
Does Village Day take place on the same date every year?
Yes: on 15 August, Assumption Day (Veliki šmaren), a public holiday in Slovenia. It has been the village's fixed annual gathering for decades, organised by the local tourist association (TD Rateče-Planica) together with the museum.
How do I get there without a car?
The nicest way is by bike on the cycle path from Kranjska Gora (7 flat kilometres, rentals available). Valley buses also serve Rateče from Kranjska Gora and Jesenice — check the reduced public-holiday timetable.
