Seven eco-friendly festivals for summer 2026
In July and August 2026, seven Slovenian festivals carry the Slovenia Green Event label: COOL Friday in Kamnik, City Promenade in Brežice, Solčava Days in the Logar Valley, KriglFest in Žalec, Portorož Nights, the Idrija Žlikrofi Festival and Taste & Cheers in Laško. All apply the same principles — waste separation, no single-use plastic, public transport and local products — so you can enjoy the Slovenian summer without giving up on responsible travel.
What is the Slovenia Green Event label?
Slovenia Green is Slovenia's national sustainable-tourism programme — the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism — run by the Slovenian Tourist Board with its partner GoodPlace. Slovenia was the first country in the world to be declared a green destination in its entirety. The scheme certifies destinations (rated Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum), providers, accommodation and, now, events.
To earn the Slovenia Green Event label, a festival must take concrete action on four fronts:
- Waste — systematic separation, reduction at source, no single-use plastic (returnable cups, biodegradable cutlery).
- Mobility — easy access by train, bus, bike or on foot, and encouragement to leave the car behind.
- Short supply chains — priority to local producers, restaurateurs and artisans, and seasonal ingredients.
- Nature & culture — respect for sites, traditions and residents, with managed visitor numbers.
For travellers, it guarantees a clean, well-run event rooted in its region — often within a destination already recognised for its sustainability.

Three highlights to kick off summer, from the Kamnik Alps to the wild valleys of the north.

City Promenade Brežice
8 – 18 July 2026, in the baroque old town of Brežice. Concerts, craft markets and activities, with a declared zero-waste approach. Free entry.
Green credentials: zero-waste approach, local creators showcased, revitalisation of the historic centre.
Solčava Days — Logar Valley
24 – 26 July 2026. Three days in the heart of one of Slovenia's most beautiful Alpine valleys: local produce, pastoral know-how and guided hikes in the Logar Valley.
Green credentials: local producers in the spotlight, guided nature outings, spread-out visitation to protect the site.
In August
Beer, Istrian cooking and Idrija dumplings: the Slovenian summer at its tastiest.
KriglFest — Žalec
7 – 8 August 2026. In the land of "green gold" hops and the famous Beer Fountain, Žalec celebrates its local brewers over a weekend. Free entry, pay for drinks.
Green credentials: local brewers and hop growers, public-transport access, waste separation.
Portorož Nights
15 – 17 August 2026, on the Portorož seafront. Three evenings of music and Istrian flavours along the promenade, at the height of the Adriatic summer.
Green credentials: local restaurateurs, longer stays encouraged, sustainable practices on the seafront.
Idrija Žlikrofi Festival
22 August 2026, at Mejca Park. Idrija (a UNESCO town) celebrates its žlikrofi, the traditional dumplings that were the first Slovenian dish to win EU protected status (TSG).
Green credentials: biodegradable cutlery, returnable cups, 80% local suppliers, waste separation.
Taste & Cheers — Laško
28 August 2026, in the municipal courtyard. Laško — a Slovenia Green destination known for its beer and thermal spa — closes the summer with a street-food evening.
Green credentials: local restaurateurs, seasonal produce, central walkable venue.
Getting there, the eco-friendly way
The easiest way to stay true to the label: leave the car. Kamnik, Žalec, Laško, Idrija, Brežice and Portorož are all connected to Ljubljana by train or bus. For late nights, check the last departures or plan to stay over — many of these towns actively encourage longer stays.
- Bring your own bottle and use the returnable cups offered on site.
- Separate your waste at the dedicated points — it's at the heart of the label.
- Eat local: producer stalls often hide the best finds.
- Stay overnight to spread out visitor numbers and enjoy the region the next day.

Patrick's note
What I love about these events is that they take you where tourists don't go: Žalec and its hops, Idrija and its žlikrofi, the Solčava Valley… You taste the real Slovenia while supporting a sustainable approach. My tip: pair a festival with an overnight stay and a hike the next day. Official programme and full list at slovenia-green.si.
