Titov trg: one of Istria's finest squares
All of Koper converges on Titov trg, a central square enclosed like a stage set: on one side the 15th-century Venetian Loggia (now a café — sit under the arcades), on the other the white, crenellated Praetorian Palace, the most Venetian building in Slovenia. The Cathedral of the Assumption and its bell tower complete the scene; you can climb to the top for a sweep of the Gulf of Trieste. Around it, a web of medieval lanes — painted houses along Kidričeva ulica, the Muda Gate, the Da Ponte fountain — makes a peaceful one-hour wander.
Koper as a cruise stop: the playbook
Koper has become a major Adriatic port of call, and one of Europe's easiest: the terminal is a 10-15 minute walk from Titov trg — no shuttle, no taxi. With 2-3 hours: old town and a coffee under the Loggia. With half a day: add the covered market and an ice cream on the waterfront. With a full day, two excursion options: Piran, the Venetian jewel of the coast (30 minutes by bus) or the Postojna and Škocjan caves in the karst hinterland. A resident's advice: Piran wins in good weather, the caves win in heatwaves or rain.
Beyond the old town
Koper is also the gateway to green Istria: hilltop villages inland (Marezige and its balcony over the sea, refošk vineyards), the Parenzana cycling route running to Izola through an old railway tunnel, and the urban beach at Žusterna for a quick swim. In summer, the seafront promenade links Koper to Izola in a flat 40-minute walk facing the Adriatic — one of the coast's most underrated strolls.

Come on Tuesday or Saturday morning: Koper's market is the most Istrian in Slovenia — olive oil, truffles, sheep's cheese, wild asparagus in spring. It's where I stock up before driving back to Ljubljana. And if you're on four wheels, parking is far easier (and cheaper) than in Piran: park at the edge of the centre, then walk everything.
