The Ljubljana Christmas market runs from **Friday 27 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027**, and entry is free. Gift stalls open **11 am to 9 pm, until 10 pm Friday to Sunday**. Most food and drink stalls serve **10 am to midnight**. The lights go on at 5 pm on opening day in Prešernov trg (Prešeren Square), and mulled wine cost €2.50 to €4 last winter, depending on the square.

Hours quoted online disagree (10 am to 9 pm, 10 am to 10 pm, 10 am to 11 pm), and the tourist board's market page lists none. These come from the [public call to stallholders](https://www.visitljubljana.com/assets/Dokumenti-PDF/Razpisi/Razpisa-prireditve-in-TD-2019/04_Javni-poziv_2026-final.pdf) that Turizem Ljubljana, the city's tourist board, published in Slovene on 1 October 2026. I have lived in Slovenia since 2004, and I use the Slovene square names because that is what the street signs say. Checked on 31 October 2026.

Sources: Turizem Ljubljana's public call; prices from [24ur](https://www.24ur.com/novice/slovenija/na-adventnih-sejmih-razburjajo-visoke-cene-hrane-in-pijace.html) (29 November 2025) and [N1](https://n1info.si/novice/slovenija/kuhancek-v-ljubljani-visje-cene-dvigajo-obrvi-a-ljudi-ne-odvrnejo-od-nakupa/) (17 December 2024). 2026 prices won't exist until opening day, and I will add them then.

A 1 am or 3 am closing means the night that follows. No weekly closing day is planned, so Mondays keep normal hours. Stallholders who declared it in advance may stay until 6 January, so treat anything after the 3rd as a bonus. Pogačarjev trg and the castle are on the [official market page](https://www.visitljubljana.com/en/visitors/events/events-in-ljubljana/christmas-markets-in-ljubljana) but outside this call.

The market ends on 3 January and the wider [Festive December programme](https://www.visitljubljana.com/en/visitors/events/events-in-ljubljana/festive-december) on 14 January. The 13 or 15 January you may see online match neither.

## Is the market open on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve?

- **Thursday 24 December**: gift stalls and small food stalls on Breg close at 6 pm, other food and drink stalls at midnight or 1 am. Free Christmas concert at 5 pm on Mestni trg.
- **Friday 25 December**: the public call plans no closure, and Visit Ljubljana lists Grandpa Frost's cottage as open from 10 am to 6 pm on Kongresni trg. Several websites still say "closed", and I have found no official document saying so. Hours on paper don't tell you how many stalls will trade on a public holiday, so don't build your Christmas Day around the market.
- **Thursday 31 December**: gift stalls and small food stalls on Breg close at 6 pm, the other stalls in the call at 3 am.

[Public holidays in Slovenia](https://www.gov.si/en/topics/national-holidays/) fall on 25 and 26 December and on 1 and 2 January, and shops close. The 26th is Independence and Unity Day here, not Boxing Day, so don't plan on the sales.

Dates for the concerts on the squares were not posted on 31 October. For a paid extra, the guided tour with a boat ride leaves at 5 pm from 5 December to 6 January: 2 hours, in English and Slovene, €22.04, book 24 hours ahead.

### Which dates to pick for a three-night break

- **Fri 27 to Mon 30 November**: the switch-on, and a market that has just opened.
- **Fri 4 to Mon 7 December**: the St Nicholas Fair, the Magical Forest, Saturday's procession and Sunday's Ice Queen land on one weekend.
- **Sat 26 to Tue 29 December, with children**: Grandpa Frost in his cottage, his procession every evening, and Ana Mraz from the 27th.
- **Tue 29 December to Fri 1 January**: the last two processions, then New Year's Eve.

Three nights give you two market evenings and a free day. [Lake Bled is an easy bus ride](https://www.e-slovenie.com/en/articles/ljubljana-to-bled-without-a-car/), 1 h to 1 h 15 from about €7, with fewer departures on Sundays and public holidays.

## How much does the Ljubljana Christmas market cost? Is it cheap?

| Square | Mulled wine | Other drinks | Food | Reported by |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Kongresni trg | €2.50–3.50 | not recorded | Kranjska klobasa €6–8; pečenica sausage with cabbage €7; chips €3.50; hot dog €6–7 | 24ur, 29 Nov 2025 |
| Prešernov trg | €4 | Tea €3 | Pleskavica €10; čevapčiči €12–15; hot dog €5 | 24ur, 29 Nov 2025 |
| Pogačarjev trg | €3.50 | Tea €3; hot chocolate €5 | Pleskavica €12; čevapčiči €13; mixed grill €18 | 24ur, 29 Nov 2025 |
| City centre | €3–4.50; €4 on Cankarjevo | Hot gin, punch €5–6 | Snacks €5–10; hearty dishes over €10 | N1, 17 Dec 2024 |

These are press reports, so treat them as a guide. Even so, the spread is real: €2.50 for the cheapest mulled wine on Kongresni trg, €4 on Prešernov trg.

Is that cheap? Slovenes grumble, and 24ur ran a headline in November 2025 about high prices causing irritation. In the same report, Austrian visitors called it cheaper than home, "in Vienna or elsewhere".

### What the stallholders pay

The rents are public too, excluding VAT: €1,700 for a gift stall, €3,300 to €6,600 for a small food and drink stall, €5,500 to €16,500 for a large one, plus €1,750 or €2,625 for electricity. [24ur's 2025 figures](https://www.24ur.com/novice/slovenija/miklavzev-in-praznicni-sejem-v-ljubljani-cene-stojnic-in-hisic-ostajajo-enake-kot-lani.html) show no change since last year. The priciest pitch, the large stall on Cankarjevo nabrežje, comes to €19,125 with electricity, about €503 a day over the market's 38 days (my sum). Don't read your drink price from this: Kongresni trg and Prešernov trg have the same large-stall rent, and mulled wine was not the same price on both in 2025.

## Where are the stalls? A walking route

There is no fence and no central square. The stalls are spread through the centre, along the Ljubljanica river and across the squares. For gifts, head to **Breg** (up to 25 stalls) and **Gallusovo nabrežje** (up to 3), the places the call puts gift stalls, with priority for Slovenian makers. I have long recommended the gloves, scarves and hats, which are soft and warm.

For a route on any day, walk the official path of the Grandpa Frost procession: Breg, Cobblers' Bridge, Mestni trg, Stritarjeva, Prešernov trg, Wolfova, Kongresni trg, Novi trg. It passes through five market locations. Add Cankarjevo nabrežje, Gallusovo nabrežje and Pogačarjev trg as you like.

## What to eat and drink

Mulled wine is *kuhano vino* and you toast with *na zdravje* ([my Slovenian phrase guide](https://www.e-slovenie.com/en/articles/slovenian-for-travelers/) has the rest). Visit Ljubljana also lists hot tea, liqueurs, sausages, žganci (buckwheat or corn mush), soups including jota, seafood and pastries. Our guide to [food in Slovenia](https://www.e-slovenie.com/en/articles/food-in-slovenia-what-and-where-to-eat/) explains the dishes.

Two rules in the public call affect what you get:

- **Look for the Okusi Ljubljane logo** ("Tastes of Ljubljana"). Each large stall must serve at least one dish from this selection and mark it, which is your best cue if you want more than a hot dog.
- **No single-use plastic.** Cups, plates, cutlery and straws are banned. A shared cup system is possible, with no details published on 31 October.

The call also encourages stalls to invent a house drink using tarragon, elderflower, anise, chicory or horseradish. That is encouragement and not a rule, so I can't promise you the horseradish one. For a proper sit-down meal, see [where to eat in Ljubljana](https://www.e-slovenie.com/en/articles/where-to-eat-in-ljubljana/).

## Who brings the presents? Three Santas, one small country

**Miklavž** (St Nicholas) is the oldest and comes on the night of 5 December. I grew up in Lorraine, where he is the patron saint, and he came to my nursery school with sweets and gingerbread. In Ljubljana he comes down from the castle by funicular on Saturday 5 December at 4.30 pm, with angels, devils and Krampus.

**Dedek Mraz** (Grandpa Frost) is the political one. After 1945 the communist authorities imported Russia's Ded Moroz and renamed him, [as RTV Slovenija tells it](https://www.rtvslo.si/news-in-english/slovenia-revealed/the-man-who-had-once-replaced-santa-claus/354671). The painter Maksim Gaspari redesigned him as a Slovene, in a long sheepskin coat and a dormouse-fur hat, and he was appearing around Ljubljana by 1952, according to [the 99% Invisible episode on the three Santas](https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/470-the-three-santas-of-slovenia/). Folklore has him living below Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain, and he comes on New Year's Eve and not at Christmas. From 26 to 30 December he parades in a carriage drawn by white Lipizzaner horses.

**Božiček**, the red-suited Santa, is the newcomer. Ethnologist Janez Bogataj, [quoted by 24ur in 2016](https://www.24ur.com/novice/slovenija/trije-dobri-mozje.html), dates his spread to the late 1980s and credits the Coca-Cola myth.

## New Year's Eve in Ljubljana

The open-air celebration is free: four parties with different music styles, from 9 pm to 2.30 am. Venues for 2026 were not published on 31 October; in 2025 they were Pogačarjev trg, Mestni trg, Kongresni trg and Trg francoske revolucije. The fireworks go up from the castle at midnight and last five minutes.

- **You can't watch from the castle.** The castle and funicular close at 5 pm on the 31st and reopen at 10 am on the 1st, according to [the castle's website](https://www.ljubljanskigrad.si/en/plan-your-visit/opening-hours/).
- **You may hear more than you see.** In fog, heavy cloud or strong wind, [Visit Ljubljana](https://www.visitljubljana.com/en/visitors/events/events-in-ljubljana/fireworks) plans a sound display with low-flying rockets.
- **Leave the firecrackers out of it.** The city backs the "Petarde, ne hvala!" campaign.

In 2025 the city announced buses running all night on the 31st, and nothing has been announced yet for 2026. I don't have a checked list of restaurants open that night, so book early.

## The lights, the dark and the weather

The 2026 theme is "Kaos. V redu." ("Chaos. In Order."), by Urban Modic: more than 50 km of festive lights and over 800 light features, according to [Turizem Ljubljana](https://visitljubljana.com/sl/obiskovalci/aktualno/pisma-iz-ljubljane/oktober-2026/zacelo-se-je-namescanje-praznicne-okrasitve-ljubljane). Last year's Christmas tree on Prešernov trg stood 18 m tall. I haven't found an official switch-off date.

The sun sets at 4.17 pm on 5 December and 4.19 pm on the 21st, and it is dark by about 4.50 pm, so get there before 5 pm to catch the change from day to night. The 1991-2020 averages for the Bežigrad weather station, as given on Wikipedia, put December at a high of 4.2 °C and a low of −0.9 °C, with 14 days of precipitation.

## Getting to Ljubljana at Christmas

- **From the UK**: [our airport guide](https://www.e-slovenie.com/en/articles/which-airport-slovenia/) lists year-round direct flights from London with easyJet from Gatwick and British Airways from Heathrow, with a Luton route joining from late 2026. Check the winter schedule before you plan around them.
- **From the US**: no direct flights this Christmas, since United's Newark route is announced for 12 May 2027. Connect through a European hub, or fly into Venice or Zagreb and continue by shuttle.
- **From the airport**: the Arriva bus costs €4 and takes 45 to 50 minutes, and shared shuttles start from €6 if booked early. See [our transfer comparison](https://www.e-slovenie.com/en/articles/ljubljana-airport-transfer/).
- **By train or coach**: the station is a building site and the temporary bus station is on Masarykova cesta. See [our guide to the new station](https://www.e-slovenie.com/en/articles/new-ljubljana-station-passenger-centre/).
- **In town**: the centre is walkable. City buses cost €1.50 a ride, with free transfers for 90 minutes, using an Urbana card or the app. The castle funicular is €6 return (reduced €4.50), according to [the castle's ticket page](https://www.ljubljanskigrad.si/en/tickets/).
- **Free buses**: nothing announced for 2026 on 31 October. In 2025 the city announced free travel in zone 1 on 18 November.

For the rest of your stay, our [Ljubljana guide](https://www.e-slovenie.com/en/destinations/ljubljana/) covers the castle, the neighbourhoods and how to get around.

## Frequently asked questions

### When is the Ljubljana Christmas market in 2026?

From 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with stallholders allowed to stay until 6 January if they declared it in advance. The wider Festive December programme runs until 14 January.

### What are the Ljubljana Christmas market opening hours?

Gift stalls: 11 am to 9 pm, 10 pm Friday to Sunday, 6 pm on 24 and 31 December. Most food and drink stalls: 10 am to midnight, 1 am on Christmas Eve night, 3 am on New Year's Eve night. Source: Turizem Ljubljana's public call, October 2026.

### Is the Ljubljana Christmas market open on Christmas Day?

Turizem Ljubljana's public call plans no closure on 25 December, and Visit Ljubljana lists Grandpa Frost's cottage as open from 10 am to 6 pm. But it is a public holiday and several websites say "closed". I can't yet guarantee the stalls will trade.

### Is there an ice rink at the Ljubljana Christmas market?

None appears in the official December 2026 programme. The latest edition I found, Ledena pravljica, ran from 16 January to 1 March 2026 in a tent on Pogačarjev trg (€4, skate hire €6, according to RTV Slovenija). No 2027 edition had been announced on 31 October.

### Is Ljubljana worth visiting in December?

Yes, if you come for the lights, the market and the free programme, less so for long walks: expect 4 °C at best and darkness by about 4.50 pm. Three nights cover two evenings in the centre and a day trip to Lake Bled.

### Is it better to stay in Ljubljana or Bled for the Christmas market?

Stay in Ljubljana. Most food and drink stalls serve until midnight and the evening events are in the centre, while the Bled bus takes 1 h to 1 h 15. Do Bled as a day trip.

I will update this page when transport and New Year's Eve details are announced, then after opening for the 2026 prices.
